Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to review the concept of household. We examined how the conceptual definition of the household is made in South Korea and other countries through prior researches and literature. As a result, the conceptual definition of the household is expressed in varied ways depending on the criteria of ‘co-residence’ and ‘housekeeping’. Additionally, two representative survey data obtained by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) were comparatively analyzed to examine what differences in the definitions of household actually affect statistics regarding income distribution. In this regard, the differences in the conceptual definition of households systematically affected the size of the household, the household types, income composition, and the amount of income, which changed the income distribution indices. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully review the concept of the household that is taken as natural in researches on the income distribution.
